Cradle Mountain National Park

Famous since the 1920s, this is one of Australia's oldest parks.  The most popular long walk is from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair; known as the "Overland Track".  When you join the track from Du Cane hut it will take 3 or 4 days to reach Cradle Mountain.  This is what you will see:

approaching Mt Ossa, Tasmania's highest mountain rarely in Australia will you see such displays of native deciduous trees as this Nothofagus gunnii or "beech" tree at the top of the highest mountain, water reflects the clouded valley
the Beech tree is very unusual plant in Australia, it drops its leaves in Autumn the dolerite rocks make a sharp profile on the Overland track you will walk around lake Will and find this hidden outlet
ancient fossils show that these mountains were once under the sea the aptly named "Waterfall Valley" once contained a huge glacier the beech swathed view of Crater lake, one of many lakes around Cradle Mountain
